BRASILIAN SUGAR

Brazil is among the world leaders in the production of sugarcane, sugar. In addition, it is among the most efficient of all major sugar producers. The country also produces and exports a diverse number of sugar products.

Since Brazil can produce high quality sugar from sugarcane, it is one of the few countries that can adjust sugar production rapidly to potential world sugar shortfalls and high international prices.

A little history

Introduced during the colonial period, the cane sugar became an important crop of the Brazilian economy. Brazil is not only the largest producer of sugarcane. It is also the first in the world in the production of sugar and ethanol and conquest, increasingly, the foreign market with the use of biofuels as an energy alternative. Accounts for more than half of the sugar sold in the world, the country must achieve average rate of increase in production of 3.25% by 2018/19, and reap 47.34 million tons of the product, which corresponds to an increase of 14.6 million tonnes for the period 2007/2008. For exports, the estimated volume for 2019 is 32.6 million tonnes.

The national policy for the production of cane sugar is oriented in the sustainable expansion of culture, based on economic, environmental and social criteria. The Agro-Ecological Zoning program Cane Sugar (ZAEcana) regulates the planting of sugarcane, taking into account the environment and the economic fitness of the region. From a detailed study, are stipulated the areas suitable for planting based on the types of climate, soil, biomass and irrigation needs.
